history
King Philip II of Spain authorized Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva in 1582 to found a new independent colony in New Spain ( Nueva España , then Mexico), which was to be called Nuevo Reino de León . Carvajal landed in New Spain with a hundred Portuguese Jews converted to Catholicism on board the Santa Catarina . He founded the settlement of San Luis Rey de Francia , today's Monterrey . Nuevo León became a province in the viceroyalty of New Spain ; a governor was at the head of the administration. From 1822 the province became part of the Mexican Empire as a federal state . After Santa Anna came to power, Nuevo León's rights as a state were restricted. In 1840 Nuevo León was part of the short-lived Rio Grande Republic . After the abolition of this state, Nuevo León became a province of Mexico again.
Since the 1980s, the Nuveo León State Prison there has repeatedly made negative headlines.
