geography

Quintana Roo is elongated on the Caribbean coast on the Yucatán peninsula . It borders Belize to the south and the states of Yucatán and Campeche to the west . The land is flat and mostly covered with rainforests , the density of which increases towards the south.

Until Cancún was founded in the 1970s, Quintana Roo was the poorest state in Mexico; today it is the one with the highest population growth rate. From 1984 (304,000) to 2005 (1,135,000), the population almost quadrupled. In 2005, 60% of the population lived in the two major tourist centers of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

history

Quintana Roo was part of the state of Yucatán until 1902 and shares its history. The indigenous population is made up of Mayans . The Mayans colonized Yucatán at least since the first century AD, later the Mayan advanced civilizations with important city-states also developed on the Yucatán. Spain conquered the area in the 16th century, and in the 19th century the peninsula became part of the state of Mexico, which was independent from Spain. The Maya people tried to gain independence from Mexico in the Caste War from 1847 to 1901, but the uprising was crushed by Mexican troops . The center of the resistance struggle was the city of Chan Santa Cruz , today Felipe Carrillo Puerto . After the conquest of Chan Santa Cruz by Mexico in 1901, the area was spun off from the state of Yucatán under the name Quintana Roo in 1902 and administered militarily. Nevertheless, the conflict in the Quintana Roo area continued to smolder until 1935. Quintana Roo has been a separate state since 1974.

Attractions

The most famous sights are the Mayan ruins of Tulum and Cobá . There are also Mayan sites in El Meco , Cancun , Xcaret , Xel Há and Muyil, among others . The cenotes , in which you can sometimes swim, are worth seeing , as are the lagoons of Akumal and Bacalar .

South of Tulum is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on the Caribbean coast, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 . A wide variety of habitats with a rich flora and fauna can be found on an area of 5,280 km². The reserve extends over the mainland, freshwater and saltwater lagoons as well as coastal and marine areas, including the offshore reef .

tourism

Cancun

Thanks to its location on the Caribbean coast , tourism is very important, the area is marketed as the Riviera Maya and offers good conditions for a beach holiday and snorkeling. In addition to older tourist centers such as the island of Cozumel , Cancun , Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres are particularly important today . The water amusement parks Xel-Há and Xcaret are also known beyond Mexico .
