history
The name Chetumal goes back to the pre-Columbian name Chaktemal . This place was the center of the Maya region of the same name , Ch'aak Temal .
During the Spanish conquest of the Yucatán, the Mayan state of Chetumal was able to repel several attacks by the Spanish before it was finally subdued in the late 16th century . Today's Chetumal was founded in 1898 as a Mexican port city under the name Payo Obispo , which was changed back to Chetumal in 1936.
