The Bay of Chetumal ( Spanish Bahía de Chetumal , English Chetumal Bay ) is a bay of the Caribbean Sea south of the Yucatán Peninsula on the border between Mexico and Belize .

The most important city on the bay is the Mexican city of Chetumal , which is the capital of the state of Quintana Roo . The bay opens to the south and is bounded by Ambergris Caye to the east. In 1901 a canal was also built to connect the Caribbean Sea and the bay ( Canal de Zaragoza ).

The border river between Mexico and Belize, the Rio Hondo, flows into the Bay of Chetumal .
