San Miguel de Cozumel (officially Cozumel ) is a city and a tourist center in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo .
geography
The port city in the northwest of the island of Cozumel is the capital of the island and the municipality of Cozumel , for which San Miguel had to administer almost ten times the area on the mainland until 1993, before the municipality Solidaridad and from it the municipality Tulum were split off. On the opposite side of the mainland in the west, about 15 km away, is Playa del Carmen , the new capital of the Municipio Solidaridad.
history
The island was already a Maya center around 1000 AD , the Spaniards landed here in 1518 and named the place Santa Cruz , Hernán Cortés followed in 1519. The approximately 40,000 Maya who currently lived on the island were later almost destroyed by smallpox completely eradicated. The importance of the place declined until the middle of the 19th century, before the Mayan period finally ended with the caste war .
San Miguel de Cozumel has been a destination for tourist cruises since the 1970s.
In 2005, Cozumel was hit directly by hurricanes twice . On July 18, Hurricane Emily hit land here, as did Hurricane Wilma on October 21 .
economy
In addition to a quay of 271 meters, the international pier also has a 45 meter dolphin , with which two cruise ships can moor at the same time. Cozumel was the destination of the first 70,000 Tons Metal Festival.
The Ironman Mexico also takes place here.
Cozumel International Airport is to the north of the city .
