Cozumel is a municipality in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo . The community had 79,535 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 489.5 km² . The administrative center is Cozumel of the same name , also called San Miguel de Cozumel .

geography

The municipality of Cozumel is made up of the island of Cozumel of the same name , offshore islets and two mainland parts around the Xel-Há ecopark and the Calica port on the Mexican Caribbean coast. It is located between sea level and 100  m in the physiographic province of the Yucatán peninsula . Geologically, the municipality is dominated by limestone , the predominant soil type is the Leptosol . Over 75% of the municipality is occupied by rainforests.

The mainland parts of the Municipios Cozumel border on the Municipios Solidaridad and Tulum .

According to the 2010 census, the municipality of Cozumel comprises 122 inhabited localidades , of which only the main town is classified as urban by the INEGI . In the 2010 census, seven towns had a population of over 100. None of the inhabited places are on the mainland.
