The Mexican state of Campeche [ kamˈpe.tʃe ], officially Free and Sovereign State of Campeche ( Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de Campeche ) occupies the western third of the Yucatán peninsula and was organized in 1857 as an independent unit. It is bordered by Tabasco to the west, Guatemala to the south, Quintana Roo to the east and the state of Yucatán to the northeast . It has an area of ​​57,924 km² with about 822,000 inhabitants.

A large part of it consists of inaccessible tropical rainforests , but in the far west it has a share of the oil fields on the Gulf of Mexico .

history

The territory of the state was shaped by the Maya in pre-Columbian times . Your former city Edzná is together with Calakmul the most important ruins in Campeche.
