history

Akumal was founded in 1958 by divers from CEDAM (Club de Exploración y Deportes Acuáticos de México) long before Cancun was developed as a tourist center. At that time there was no road connection to Akumal. However, large numbers of mosquitoes from the swamps in the hinterland prevented excessive tourist development.
