Akumal describes a small town with beaches and resorts on the Mexican Caribbean coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the municipality of Tulum . In the hinterland at Highway 307 is the part of Akumal that was originally intended as a residential area for hotel employees, but now also houses hotels and holiday homes.
Akumal is best known for watching sea turtles , which can be seen by snorkelers in the adjacent bay . There are several in the surrounding area sinkholes , here Cenote called Grikes of caves in the limestone.

Akumal includes the Bahía de Akumal , north of it the Bahía de la Media Luna and at the end the lagoon of YalKu . To the south of it are the Bahía de Jade and the Bahía Sur .
history
Akumal was founded in 1958 by divers from CEDAM (Club de Exploración y Deportes Acuáticos de México) long before Cancun was developed as a tourist center. At that time there was no road connection to Akumal. However, large numbers of mosquitoes from the swamps in the hinterland prevented excessive tourist development.
