The party was founded in 1997 under the name Convergencia por la Democracia (Convergence for Democracy) and entered the party register in 1999. In the national elections in 2000, she ran as part of the center-left alliance Alianza por México and supported the presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzanos from the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). In 2002 it shortened its name to Convergencia . In the parliamentary election the following year, she ran for the first time with her own candidates, received 2.3% of the vote and 5 of the 500 seats in the House of Representatives .

In the 2006 presidential election , the Convergencia again joined the PRD and the Partido del Trabajo (PT) as Coalición Por el Bien de Todos and supported the candidacy of Andrés Manuel López Obrador , who was just defeated. In the parliamentary election held at the same time, Convergencia received 18 seats. In the 2009 parliamentary elections, the party got 2.5% of the vote and 6 seats. In 2010, in Oaxaca , a member of Convergencia was elected governor of a state for the first time: Gabino Cué Monteagudo . He was the first non- PRI governor of Oaxaca in 80 years . His term of office lasted until 2013.

At the end of July 2011, the party renamed itself again and has its current name. For the 2012 presidential election , she again ran in alliance with the PRD and PT, this time under the name Frente Amplio Progresista . She again supported the candidacy of López Obrador, who lost again. At the same time she received 16 of the 500 seats. Dante Delgado Rannauro was National Coordinator of Movimiento Ciudadano from 2012 to 2018. In the 2015 parliamentary election, the party was able to increase its result to 6.1% (over 2.4 million votes) and 26 seats.

For the nationwide elections in 2018 , the Movimiento Ciudadano entered into an alliance with the PRD and the conservative Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) under the name Por México al Frente and supported the PAN presidential candidate Ricardo Anaya Cortés , which, however, was unsuccessful. In the House of Representatives election held at the same time, Movimiento Ciudadano's share of the vote fell to 4.4%, but the number of seats rose to 27. In addition, the party won the gubernatorial election in Jalisco state . Since then, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez , who was previously mayor of the metropolis of Guadalajara, has been head of government there.
