The county is located just south of the geographic center of Mississippi and has an area of 1,581 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Scott County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after Abram M. Scott (1785-1833), a governor of Mississippi (1832-1833).

Five buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Scott County had 28,423 people in 10,183 households and 7,535 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.20 percent white, 38.88 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.52 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 5.84 percent of the population.

Of the 10,183 households, 36.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.8 percent were married couples living together, 18.8 percent were single mothers, and 26.0 percent were non-families. 22.2 percent of all households were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over.
