The Clarke County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Quitman , named after John A. Quitman , a governor and member of the United States Congress . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located on east Mississippi, bordering Alabama and has an area of 1796 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Clarke County was formed in 1833 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Joshua G. Clarke , a Mississippi Supreme Court Justice.

As of the 2000 census , Clarke County had 17,955 people in 6,978 households and 5,024 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.49 percent white, 34.81 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.30 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.67 percent of the population.

Of the 6,978 households, 33.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.9 percent were single mothers, and 28.0 percent were non-families. 25.5 percent of all households were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over.
