history
Simpson County was formed on January 23, 1824 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after Josiah Simpson , a member of the Mississippi Constitutional Convention .

As of the 2000 census , Simpson County had 27,639 people in 10,076 households and 7,385 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.39 percent white, 34.31 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.15 percent of the population.
Of the 10,076 households, 34.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.8 percent were single mothers, and 26.7 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.14.
27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.1 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 94.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 90.4 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,343 USD , for a family is 32,797 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,197 versus $ 20,136 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,344. About 17.5 percent of families and 21.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
