The county is located in south-central Mississippi, about 50 km from Louisiana in the south and has an area of 1,060 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

	Simpson County
Lawrence County		Covington County
	Marion County	Lamar County

J. Davis

Jefferson Davis County was formed on March 31, 1906 from parts of Covington County and Lawrence County. It was named after Jefferson Davis , President of the Confederate States of America and thus leader of the southern states in the Civil War .

Four places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson Davis County had 13,962 people in 5,177 households and 3,768 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 41.66 percent white, 57.38 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.77 percent of the population.

Of the 5,177 households, 32.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.7 percent were married couples living together, 21.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.2 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households were single households and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.20.
