The Calhoun County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Pittsboro . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in north-central Mississippi and has an area of 1,523 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water.
The main tributaries of Grenada Lake , located in neighboring Grenada County , flow through the county in a south-westerly direction with the Skuna River and the upper reaches of the Yalobusha River .

history
The Calhoun County was formed on March 8, 1852 from parts of Lafayette County and Yalobusha County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), a former Secretary of War (1817-1825), Vice-President (1825-1832) and Secretary of State of the United States (1844-1845).
Two places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018.

As of the 2000 census , Calhoun County had 15,069 people in 6,019 households and 4,255 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.41 percent white, 28.65 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.11 percent of the population.
Of the 6,019 households, 31.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers, and 29.3 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent of all households were single households and 13.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.97.
25.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 87.0 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 27,113 USD , for a family is 34,407 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,458 versus $ 19,491 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,106. About 14.9 percent of families and 18.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
