The Sharkey County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Rolling Fork , which was named after the Rolling Fork Plantation , on the site of which it was built.

history

Sharkey County was formed on March 29, 1876 from parts of Issaquena, Warren and Washington Counties. It was named after Governor William L. Sharkey (1798–1873), a governor of Mississippi (1865).

Five of the county's sites are on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 3, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Sharkey County had 6,580 people in 2,163 households and 1,589 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 29.36 percent white, 69.32 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races.
