The Sharkey County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Rolling Fork , which was named after the Rolling Fork Plantation , on the site of which it was built.

The county is located almost in the far west of Mississippi and has an area of 1126 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Sharkey County was formed on March 29, 1876 from parts of Issaquena, Warren and Washington Counties. It was named after Governor William L. Sharkey (1798–1873), a governor of Mississippi (1865).
Five of the county's sites are on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 3, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Sharkey County had 6,580 people in 2,163 households and 1,589 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 29.36 percent white, 69.32 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.31 percent of the population.
Of the 2,163 households, 36.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 40.0 percent were married couples living together, 26.8 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.56.
33.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 20.4 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 88.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 82.4 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 22,285 USD , for a family is 26,786 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,563 versus $ 17,931 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,396. About 30.5 percent of families and 38.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
