The George County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Lucedale . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, borders Alabama in the east , is about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of 1253 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
George County was formed on March 16, 1910 from parts of Green County and Jackson County. It was named after James Z. George a presiding judge of the United States Supreme Court and a US Senator .
One place in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018, the Bilbo Basin Shell Deposit Site .

According to the 2000 census , George County had 19,144 people in 6,742 households and 5,305 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.38 percent white, 8.82 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian and 0.84 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.60 percent of the population.
Of the 6,742 households, 38.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, and 21.3 percent were non-families. 19.1 percent of all households were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.17.
29.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 100.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 98.6 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 34,730 USD , for a family is 39,386 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,575 versus $ 20,542 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,337. About 13.0 percent of families and 16.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
