The Hinds County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seats are Jackson , which is also the capital of Mississippi and named after Andrew Jackson , the seventh President of the United States, and Raymond . It is one of the ten counties in Mississippi that have two county governments.

The county is located slightly southwest of the geographic center of Mississippi, is about 35 km to the west from Louisiana and has an area of ​​2272 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Hinds County was formed on February 12, 1821 from parts of Choctaw Land . It was named after Thomas Hinds , a member of the United States Congress .

Historical objects

West of Bovina on the Warren County border , the Big Black River Railroad Bridge spans the Big Black River . The bridge has been registered in the NRHP since 1988 .

In Raymond is the historic Peyton House (also known as Waverly ). The house is north of Raymond on Clinton Road. The building, constructed in 1831, was registered in the NRHP on October 3, 1973.

Six places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . A total of 104 structures and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Hinds County had 250,800 people in 91,030 households and 62,355 families. The population density was 111 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 37.31 percent white, 61.12 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.60 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.79 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.22.

27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 12.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.0 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 88.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 83.5 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 33,991 USD , for a family is 40,525 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,930 versus $ 24,593 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,785. About 16.1 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
