The Monroe County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Aberdeen , which was named after the city of the same name in Scotland .

history

James Monroe

Monroe County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1821 . It was named after James Monroe (1758–1831), the fifth President of the United States.

One archaeological site has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Hester Site . A total of 36 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 38,014 people in 14,603 households and 10,660 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.37 percent white, 30.77 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.47 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.69 percent of the population.

27.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 89.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 84.7 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 30,307 USD , for a family is 36,749 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,232 versus $ 20,411 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,072. About 13.6 percent of families and 17.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
