The Lamar County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Vernon . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Alabama, borders Mississippi to the west and has an area of ​​1,568 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marion County , Fayette County, and Pickens County .

history

Lamar County was incorporated as Jones County on February 4, 1867 and dissolved on November 13, 1867. On October 8, 1868, it was formed again under the name Sanford County . On February 8, 1877, it was renamed Lamar County , after the politician, military and diplomat LQC Lamar . Lamar was the first member of the House of Representatives for Georgia and Mississippi . During the Civil War , he served as a colonel in the Confederate States Army and later as a diplomat for the Confederate States of America in the Russian Empire , the Second Empire and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . After the American Civil War, he worked briefly as a professor before being elected to the United States Senate. He then served as Secretary of the Interior and Supreme Court Justice in the United States .

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 3, 2020, the James Greer Bankhead House .

After the census in 2000 15,904 people lived in Lamar County. 199 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,468 households and 4,715 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.87 percent white, 11.98 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.51 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.30 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.9 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 28,059 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,050. Males had a median income of $ 30,453 versus $ 18,947 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,435. 13.3 percent of families and 16.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
