The Covington County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 37,631 people and a population density of 14 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Andalusia .

The county is located in the extreme south of Alabama, on the northern border of Florida and has an area of ​​2,704 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Escambia County , Conecuh County , Butler County , Crenshaw County , Coffee County, and Geneva County .

history

Covington County was formed on December 7, 1821. It was named after Brigade General Leonard Wailes Covington from Maryland , who served in the British-American War .

Covington County had a population of 37,631 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 523 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 15,640 households and 10,791 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.19 percent white, 12.35 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the 26,336 USD , and the median income for a family 33,201 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,453 versus $ 19,640 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,365. 14.1 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
