The county is located in central northwest Alabama and has an area of ​​2086 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Cullman County , Blount County , Jefferson County , Tuscaloosa County , Fayette County , Marion County, and Winston County .

history

Walker County was formed on December 26, 1823. It was named after the politician John Williams Walker . Walker was a member of the State Legislature of the Alabama Territory and then a delegate to the constitutional convention of the state. From 1819 to 1823 he was a member of the United States Senate . Walker's district capital is Jasper, named after William Jasper , a non-commissioned officer in the Continental Army who became famous during the American Revolutionary War.

Seven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 14, 2020, including Bankhead House , Boshell's Mill, and Jasper Downtown Historic District .
