The Jefferson County is a county in the US state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Birmingham .
On November 9, 2011, the county filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy over $ 3 billion in debt . This is the largest case of a US county bankruptcy to date, triggered by a financial construct of a banking group that was supposed to finance a new sewage and sewer system.
geography
The county is located north of the geographic center of Alabama has an area of 2911 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Blount County , St. Clair County , Shelby County , Bibb County , Tuscaloosa County, and Walker County .
history
Jefferson County was formed on December 13, 1819. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third President of America and one of the founding fathers of the United States . The first district capital was Carrollsville in 1819, then Elyton in 1821 and since 1873 Birmingham.
Historical objects
Located at numbers 3233, 3232, and 3236 at 29th Avenue North is the historic Parsonage Bethel Baptist Church and Guardhouse . The church with its two outbuildings was listed on April 5, 2005 on the National Register of Historic Places with the number 05000455.
A total of 170 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 2, 2020), with the Bethel Baptist Church, Parsonage and Guardhouse , Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and the Sloss Blast Furnace Site having the status of one Have National Historic Landmarks .

Jefferson County's population was 662,047 as of the 2000 census . 16,113 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 263,265 households and 175,861 families. The population density was 230 inhabitants per square kilometer. By race , the population was composed of 58.1% White, 39.36% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 0.59% other races. 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos , regardless of race.
Of the 263,265 households, 30.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. There were married couples living together in 46.1 percent, 17.2 percent were single mothers, 33.2 percent were not families, 28.7 percent of all households were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 84.5 males.
The median income for a household in the 36,868 US dollars , and the median income for a family 45,951 dollars. Men had a median income of $ 35,954 and women $ 26,631. The per capita income was $ 20,892. 11.6 percent of families and 14.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
In November 2011, it was announced that the county was insolvent because it rushed to rehabilitate the sewer system. A rescue plan in which creditors were supposed to forego a billion dollars had failed due to resistance from the local council.

Another botanical garden is located in Hoover , these are the Aldridge Botanical Gardens with an area of 121,000 m².
