The county is located in central southwest Alabama and has an area of ​​2350 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Dallas County , Lowndes County , Butler County , Monroe County , Clarke County, and Marengo Counties .

history

Wilcox County was formed on December 13, 1819. It was named after Lieutenant Joseph M. Wilcox (1791-1814), who fought in the Creek War of 1813/14 . He was captured and scalped by the Muskogee .

According to the 2000 census , Wilcox County had 13,183 people. 301 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,776 households and 3,376 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the 16,646 USD , and the median income for a family 22,200 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,216 versus $ 17,274 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,903. 36.1 percent of families and 39.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
