The Marengo County is a county in the US state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Linden , formerly the Town of Marengo .

The county is located in southwest Alabama, about 80 km to the west from Mississippi and has an area of 2546 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hale County , Perry County , Dallas County , Wilcox County , Clarke County , Choctaw County , Sumter County, and Greene County .
history
Marengo County was formed on February 6, 1818 from former Choctaw Indian land. The name comes from the Italian village of Marengo , where Napoleon won a decisive victory over Austria on June 14, 1800 ( Battle of Marengo ). In 1823 the district capital Town of Marengo was renamed Linden , a short form of Hohenlinden . There on December 3, 1800 Austria was defeated again by Napoleon's troops ( Battle of Hohenlinden ).
Historical objects
- In Dayton, at the intersection of Alabama State Route 25 and Palmetto Road, is the historic William Poole House , listed on July 7, 1994 by the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) with the number 94000687.
- Not far from Faunsdale is the historic Cedar Grove Plantation . The plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
A total of 28 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the NRHP (as of April 4, 2020), with the Gaineswood plantation having the status of a National Historic Landmark .

According to the 2000 census , Marengo County's population was 22,539. 193 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,767 households and 6,277 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 47.28 percent white, 51.71 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,767 households, 34.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. There were married couples living together in 48.4 percent, 19.4 percent were single mothers, 28.4 percent were not families, 26.5 percent of all households were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.08.
28.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.3 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,025 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,475. Males had a median income of $ 36,053 versus $ 19,571 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,308. 22.2 percent of families and 25.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
