geography

The county is located north of the geographic center of Alabama and has an area of ​​2097 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: St. Clair County , Talladega County , Coosa County , Chilton County , Bibb County, and Jefferson County .

history

Shelby County was formed on February 7, 1818 from parts of Creek Indian territory. It was named after Isaac Shelby , a hero in the American Revolutionary War and first governor of Kentucky . The first district capital was Shelbyville, then it was Columbia, renamed Columbiana on January 13, 1832.

Ten structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 7, 2020, including Columbiana City Hall , Downtown Montevallo Historic District and the King House .

According to the 2000 census , Shelby County had 143,293 people. 1,675 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 54,631 households and 40,590 families. The population density was 70 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.80 percent white, 7.40 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 1.03 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 33.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 8.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 55,440 , and the median income for a family is $ 64,105. Males had a median income of $ 45,798 versus $ 31,242 for females. The per capita income was $ 27,176. 4.6 percent of families and 6.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
