The Perry County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Marion .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center, about 110 km from Mississippi , and has an area of ​​1,875 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Bibb County , Chilton County , Dallas County , Marengo County, and Hale Counties .

history

Perry County was formed on December 13, 1819. It was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry of Rhode Iceland , a naval officer in the War of 1812 . The first district capital was Muckle's Ridge , later renamed Marion.

According to the 2000 census , Perry County had 11,861 people. Of these, 471 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,333 households and 3,046 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 30.86 percent white, 68.38 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 83.9 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 78.4 males.

The median income for a household in the 20,200 USD , and the median income for a family 26,150 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,272 versus $ 16,839 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,948. 31.2 percent of families and 35.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
