history

The first settlers settled in the area in 1818 and named the place Woodville . This name came about because the surrounding streets and paths were mostly made of wood . The city was founded in 1836. When the Alabama and Mississippi Rivers Railroad led through the town in 1857 , it experienced a considerable boom. At the suggestion of a local farmer, the place was also renamed Uniontown in 1861 after his hometown Uniontown in Maryland . Due to the fertile soil and the favorable climatic conditions, the cultivation of cotton became the main livelihood of the inhabitants. After the plantations were attacked by the cotton boll beetle and the yields of the cotton processing industry fell sharply, many residents left the city. However, agriculture has remained the main industry of the place to this day.
