The Limestone County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Athens .

The county is located in the far north of Alabama, borders Tennessee and has an area of 1,572 square kilometers, of which 101 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Morgan County , Lawrence County, and Lauderdale Counties .
history
Limestone County was established on February 6, 1818. It was named after Limestone Creek , which flows through the county here. This got its name because of the local occurrence of "limestone" ("limestone").

According to the 2000 census , Limestone County had 65,676 people. 2,643 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 24,688 households and 18,219 families. The population density was 45 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.79 percent white, 13.33 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.65 percent of the population.
Of the 24,688 households, 34.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 26.2 percent were not families, 23.4 percent of all households were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.02.
24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24, 32.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 103.1 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 101.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,405 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,146. Males had a median income of $ 35,743 versus $ 23,389 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,782. 9.8 percent of families and 12.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
