Madison is a city in the US state of Alabama , USA . It is located in Madison County , but part of the city area extends into Limestone County . The city had 42,938 inhabitants , according to the 2010 US census .

Madison's geographic coordinates are 34 ° 43 ′  N , 86 ° 44 ′  W (34.715065, −86.739644). The city is on Interstate 565 and US Highway 72 . A main line and a branch line of the Norfolk Southern Railway run through Madison.

history

The first white resident of Madison was John Cartwright, who settled in 1818. Originally the settlement was known as Madison Station. This developed around a stop on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad during the 1850s .

During the Civil War , Madison was the site of a battle on March 16, 1864, when Col. Josiah Patterson's 5th Alabama Cavalry, assisted by Col. James H. Stuart's Cavalry Battalion, drove Col. Adam G. Gorgas's 13th Illinois Infantry Regiment out of town . Patterson's men captured a regimental command post train and captured 66 soldiers. They set Union Army supplies on fire and destroyed the tracks before they retreated. Troops from the 5th Ohio Cavalry, 59th Indiana Infantry, and 5th Iowa Infantry were sent out in pursuit and skirmished with Patterson's rearguard that evening south of Madison at Fletcher's Ferry.

More recently, the city has become a rapidly growing suburb of Huntsville . In 1980 the population was around 4,000, in 2006 it was 36,824.

education

In 1997 the city built its own school system. Around 8,000 students from Madison and Triana are educated in the municipal schools .
