Leeds is a city in Jefferson County in the US state of Alabama , parts of the district also extend into St. Clair County and Shelby County . In 2004, Leeds had about 11,000 inhabitants according to the calculations of the census office.

The city has an area of 58.3 km², of which 57.9 km² is land and 0.4 km² (= 0.67%) is water.
history
The city, whose namesake is Leeds in West Yorkshire , England , was incorporated on April 27, 1887. The growth of the young settlement was driven by three factors: the incorporation of the nearby city of Birmingham and the start of iron ore processing there , the construction of the Georgia Pacific Railway from Birmingham to Atlanta , Georgia, and the construction of a Portland cement factory in 1906.
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Leeds was inhabited by 10,455 people. The population density was 180.6 people per km ². There were 4585 housing units at an average of 79.2 per km ². The population in Leeds was 81.98% White , 15.91% Black or African American , 0.34% Native American , 0.48% Asian , 0.08% Pacific Islander , 0.40% said others Belonging to races and 0.81% named two or more races. 1.34% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents were distributed to 4301 households out of which 30.7% were living in children under 18 years of age. 51.6% of households were married, 14.0% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 30.5% were not families. 27.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.95.
