Marion County is a county in the state of Alabama in the United States . The county seat is Hamilton . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Alabama, borders Mississippi to the west and has an area of 1926 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Winston County , Walker County , Fayette County, and Lamar County .

history

Marion County was formed on February 13, 1818. It was named after General Francis Marion from South Carolina . In 1820, Hamilton became the district capital.

Two structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 5, 2020, the Ernest Baxter Fite House and the Pearce's Mill .

Marion County's population was 31,214 as of the 2000 census . 907 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 12,697 households and 9,040 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.76 percent white, 3.63 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 12,697 households, 30.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were not families, 26.5 percent of all households were single households and 12.7 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.87 people.

22.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the 27,475 USD , and the median income for a family 34,359 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,913 versus $ 19,022 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,321. 12.0 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
