Marion County is a county in the state of Alabama in the United States . The county seat is Hamilton . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Alabama, borders Mississippi to the west and has an area of ​​1926 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Winston County , Walker County , Fayette County, and Lamar County .

history

Marion County was formed on February 13, 1818. It was named after General Francis Marion from South Carolina . In 1820, Hamilton became the district capital.

Two structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 5, 2020, the Ernest Baxter Fite House and the Pearce's Mill .

Marion County's population was 31,214 as of the 2000 census . 907 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 12,697 households and 9,040 families.
