The Conecuh County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Evergreen .

geography

The county is located in southern Alabama, about 50 km from Florida's northern border and has an area of ​​2208 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Butler County , Covington County , Escambia County, and Monroe County .

history

Conecuh County was formed on February 13, 1818 from parts of Monroe County. The name comes from the dialect of the Muskogee and is derived from “koha anaka” (“near the reed bed”). From 1818 to 1868, Sparta was the seat of the county government.

Four structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 1, 2020, including the Johnston, Asa, Farmhouse , the Louisville and Nashville Depot, and the New Evergreen Commercial Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , Conecuh County had 14,089 people. 79 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,792 households and 3,938 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.40 percent white, 43.55 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.72 percent of the population.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,111 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,424. Males had a median income of $ 28,115 versus $ 19,350 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,964. 21.7 percent of families and 26.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
