Brooklyn is an unincorporated community in Conecuh County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

geography

Brooklyn is located in southern Alabama in the southern United States, about 18 miles north of the Florida border . It is 7 kilometers north of the 339 square kilometer Conecuh National Forest and immediately northwest of the Conecuh River , which later flows into Escambia Bay , part of Pensacola Bay north of the Gulf of Mexico .

Nearby locations include River Falls (14 miles northeast), Carolina (14 miles east), Castleberry (15 miles west), Andalusia (25 miles east), and Brewton (29 miles southwest). The next larger city with 195,000 inhabitants is Mobile, about 130 kilometers to the southwest .

history

Most of Brooklyn's early settlers were from Georgia . Around 1820 a ferry crossed the Sepulga River for the first time to cope with the growing passenger traffic. In 1820 this ferry company was sold to Edwin Robinson, who opened a shop here and thus founded the city. It was also he who chose the name of the place based on his hometown Brooklyn in Connecticut .

The first church was built in 1821, and a school followed later. With more stores opening, Brooklyn quickly became the most important city in the area. A post office was opened in 1829 and was in operation until 2011.

About 11 kilometers south of US Highway 29 runs on a joint route with Alabama State Route 15 . US Highway 84 runs 17 kilometers north, and US Highway 31 is 15 kilometers west . The route of Interstate 65 is 28 kilometers to the northwest .

Middleton Field Airport is approximately 30 kilometers northwest , and South Alabama Regional Airport is 38 kilometers east .
