history

The word Andalusia is composed of the two Spanish words changes , go and Lutier easy. So Andalusia simply means to go . The place originated in 1841 when the Conecuh River was flooded and the residents of the area were forced to relocate to higher areas. In 1844 the county seat was moved from Montezuma to Andalusia. The first post office was built here in 1846, and the city has had its current name ever since.

In 1899 two rail links were moved through Andalusia, which accelerated the growth of the city. The population was 551 in 1900, but at that time people lived on scattered farms. Over the years Andalusia grew slowly but steadily. The urban area was enlarged several times. Today Andalusia is the largest city in the county with 8,897 inhabitants.
