Franklin County is a county in the state of Alabama in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 31,223 residents and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Russellville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
geography
The county is located in northwest Alabama, borders Mississippi to the west and has an area of 1,674 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Colbert Counties , Lawrence Counties , Winston Counties , and Marion Counties .
history
Franklin County was formed on February 6, 1818, with the formation taking effect on June 1 of the same year. It was named after the inventor, writer and politician Benjamin Franklin . Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States , negotiated the Peace of Paris with others and, as a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention, was instrumental in drafting the American Constitution . The first county capital was Russellville, named after William Russel , an early settler and chief scout to General Andrew Jackson during the Indian War of 1813 and 1814. In 1849 Frankfort was elected county capital and in 1879 it became Belgreen. After the courthouse built there burned to the ground in 1890, Russellville became the district capital again in 1891.
Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 2, 2020, the Alabama Iron Works , Overton Farm, and the Russellville Commercial Historic District .

Franklin County's population was 31,223 as of the 2000 census . 402 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 12,259 households and 8,949 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.68 percent white, 4.21 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent were from two or more races. 7.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,259 households, 32.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. There were married couples living together in 59.2 percent, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 27.0 percent were not families, 24.5 percent of all households were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.9 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the 27,177 USD , and the median income for a family 34,274 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,497 versus $ 18,631 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,814. 15.2 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
