The Lowndes County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Hayneville .

The county is located in south-central Alabama and has an area of ​​1,878 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Autauga County , Montgomery County , Crenshaw County , Butler County , Wilcox County, and Dallas County .

history

Lowndes County was formed on January 20, 1830 from parts of Montgomery County, Dallas County and Butler County. It was named after the South Carolina politician William Lowndes . Lowndes served in the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1811 to 1822 .

Four structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 4, 2020, including the Calhoun School Principal's House , the Lowndes County Courthouse, and the Lowndesboro Historic District .

As of the 2000 census , Lowndes County had 13,473 people. Of these, 47 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,909 households and 3,588 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 82.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 23,050 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,935. Males had a median income of $ 27,694 versus $ 20,137 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,457. 26.6 percent of families and 31.4 percent of residents were below the poverty line, 23.5 percent of the population has diabetes - the highest rate in the United States - and 34.5 percent of residents have hookworm , a disease that as a result of extreme poverty.
