The Macon County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is located in Tuskegee , which means warrior in the Muskhoge dialect of the Creek Indians .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Alabama, about 70 km to the east from Georgia , and has an area of ​​1,588 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lee County , Russell County , Bullock County , Montgomery County , Elmore County, and Tallapoosa Counties .

history

Macon County was formed on December 18, 1832 from the land ceded by the Creek Indians on March 24, 1832. It was named after Nathaniel Macon , a soldier and statesman from North Carolina .

Macon County had a population of 24,105 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 2,285 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,950 households and 5,540 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer.
