The Macon County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is located in Tuskegee , which means warrior in the Muskhoge dialect of the Creek Indians .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Alabama, about 70 km to the east from Georgia , and has an area of ​​1,588 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lee County , Russell County , Bullock County , Montgomery County , Elmore County, and Tallapoosa Counties .

history

Macon County was formed on December 18, 1832 from the land ceded by the Creek Indians on March 24, 1832. It was named after Nathaniel Macon , a soldier and statesman from North Carolina .

14 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 4, 2020), with the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site has the status of a National Historic Landmark . The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is another National Historic Site in the county.

Macon County had a population of 24,105 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 2,285 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,950 households and 5,540 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.64 percent African American, 13.96 percent white, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races.
