Coffee County is a county in the US state of Alabama in the United States . The county seat is in Elba , although there is an additional courthouse in Enterprise . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
geography
The county is located in southeast Alabama, about 25 miles from Florida's northern border and has an area of 1762 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Pike Counties , Dale Counties , Geneva Counties , Covington Counties , and Crenshaw Counties .
history
Coffee County was formed on December 29, 1841 from parts of Dale County. It was named after General John R. Coffee , who fought in the Creek War of 1813/14 and was a business partner of President Andrew Jackson. The county's first administrative seat was in Wellborn. In 1852 the headquarters were moved to Elba.
Five structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 1, 2020, including the Boll Weevil Monument , the Coffee County Courthouse and the Rawls Hotel .

Coffee County's population was 43,615 as of the 2000 census . 780 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,421 households and 12,490 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.11 percent white, 18.37 percent African American, 0.91 percent Native American, 0.95 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.89 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 17,421 households, 32.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. There were married couples living together in 56.4 percent, 12.1 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were not families, 24.9 percent of all households were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 and over or above. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.93.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 92 males.
The median income for a household in the 33,664 USD , and the median income for a family 39,664 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,468 versus $ 20,234 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,321. 11.3 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
