Enterprise is a city in southeast Coffee County and is also to a small extent in southwest Dale County , both in the US state of Alabama , United States . In 2004, Enterprise had a population of 22,200. The city is together with Elba seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) of Coffee County. The city area is 80.3 km².

history

The founder of the town of Enterprise was John Henry Carmichael, who settled in 1881. He was followed by numerous others and in 1882 the post office of the nearby village of Drake Eye was moved here. Enterprise was officially registered as a town in 1896. At that time it had 250 inhabitants. A little later, the Alabama Midland Railway Company took its seat here, which gave the place increased growth. By 1906 the population had risen to 3750 inhabitants. After the cotton boll beetle wiped out most of the city's cotton plantations , the locals switched to peanuts . This diversification brought the residents greater prosperity. Therefore, in gratitude, the community erected a monument to the pest, the Boll Weevil Monument , which was erected in 1919. The statue in the town square depicts a woman holding up a cotton boll beetle with her hands.

There is also a fresco by Paul Arlt in the town . The work was created in 1940 for the US Treasury as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), an institution that brought unemployed people into wages during the New Deal (1935–1943).

Together with Ozark , located in Dale County, Enterprise is a preferred residence for Army members and retirees at the nearby Army Aviation School in Fort Rucker .

In the early afternoon of March 1, 2007, Enterprise was terrified by a tornado . This was part of a tornado outbreak and reached EF4 on the extended Fujita scale . The tornado left nine dead and 121 injured and was the biggest catastrophe Enterprise ever hit, with damage totaling more than 300 million US dollars. Most of the fatalities were in Enterprise High School , where eight students died when a roof collapsed. The 400-meter-wide path of devastation affected more than 370 houses. The National Guard was installed and President Bush declared Coffee County a disaster area after his visit, and Dale County two days later.

Three locations in Enterprise are listed on the National Register of Historic Places , the Boll Weevil Monument , the Rawls Hotel, and the Seaboard Coastline Depot as of July 11, 2019.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, 21,178 people lived in the city. The population density was 264.2 people per km ². There were 9641 housing units at an average of 120.3 per km ². The Butler population was 71.62% White , 22.95% Black or African American , 0.48% Native American , 1.60% Asian, and 0.16% Pacific Islanders ; 1.27% said they belonged to other races and 1.92% mentioned two or more races. 3.88% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Enterprise distributed to 8533 households out of which 33.1% were living in children under 18 years of age. 53.6% of households are married, 13.3% had a female head of the household without a husband and 30.0% did not form families. 25.7% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.95.

The urban population was divided into 25.4% minors, 9.3% 18–24 year olds, 27.5% 25–44 year olds, 23.8% 45–64 year olds and 14.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 91.3 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 86.8 men.

The median household income in Enterprise was 37,661 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 45,510 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 37,131 compared with $ 20,560 for women. The per capita income was $ 20,493. 13.6% of the population and 10.7% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 21.0% of minors and 11.1% of those aged 65 and over.
