The Fayette County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Fayette . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Alabama, about 50 km to the west from Mississippi , and has an area of ​​1,630 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marion County , Walker County , Tuscaloosa County , Pickens County, and Lamar Counties .

history

The first settlement in the area of ​​today's county seat was originally called LaFayette and was given an independent local government in January 1821, with the name changed to Fayette Court House . Fayette County was formed on December 20, 1824 by resolution of the state legislature from parts of Tuscaloosa and Marion Counties . It was named after General La Fayette , who served in the American Revolutionary War under George Washington and was one of France's leading politicians in the early stages of the French Revolution . Fayette was touring the United States at the time of the upcoming appointment. The present courthouse was built in 1911 . In April 2011 , four people died in Berry in a tornado outbreak that hit the American Southeast with unprecedented strength .

Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 2, 2020, the Fayette County Courthouse District , the John Clifford Grimsley House and the Edward Rose House .

Fayette County's population was 18,495 as of the 2000 census . 340 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,493 households and 5,342 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. 23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44, 25.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 28,539 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,291. Males had a median income of $ 29,239 versus $ 20,606 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,439. 13.1 percent of families and 17.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
