history
The first settlement of the place followed shortly after the American War of Independence . At that time the place was called Burnt Corn Spring, based on a nearby water source .
There are two theories as to the origin of the name: One says that passers-by found dried-up grain on the site of today's location; the second says that during the Creek War in the early 19th century, grain was deliberately burned to damage the soil. There are also other theories.
In 1798 the area became part of the Mississippi Territory but was controlled by the Muskogee Nation . Between 1805 and 1811, the place served as a stop on Federal Road , a path through the said area.
From 1816 the place developed more strongly than before, large parts of the land were sold to settlers from South Carolina , Virginia and Georgia . When the place became part of the Alabama Territory in 1817 , it received a post office at the same time, which was in operation until 2002. The first school was founded in 1820, a Baptist church followed in 1821 , and the first shop in 1822.
