Monroeville, Alabama

Monroeville is a small town in Monroe County , Alabama in the United States . In the 2010 census, the population was 6519 people. Monroeville became famous as the hometown of the writers Truman Capote and Harper Lee , who grew up here in the 1930s. Harper Lee modeled the fictional small town of Maycomb from her novel “ Who disturbs the nightingale ”, which won the Pulitzer Prize, after her hometown Monroeville. To this day, the success of “Who disturbs the nightingale” attracts many tourists to Monroeville. The small town also bears the title of "literary capital" of Alabama.

Monroeville was founded in 1815 on the land of dispossessed indigenous people. After it was initially called "Centerville", it was renamed "Monroeville" in 1899 after President James Monroe . Around 1900 the place had just over 400 inhabitants, but in the following 90 years the population increased steadily. Only in the last few decades has the population decreased slightly. To this day, Monroeville is mainly characterized by agriculture, although the textile industry and now the health sector are also located there. Monroeville is also home to the Alabama Southern Community College. The proportion of whites is around 53%, the proportion of African-Americans in the population of Monroeville around 44%.

Three places in Monroeville are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 30, 2020), the Dellet Plantation , the Monroeville Downtown Historic District, and the Old Monroe County Courthouse .
