Helena is a city ​​in Shelby County, founded in 1877 , and partly in Jefferson County in the US state of Alabama . It has about 12,300 inhabitants (as of 2004) on an area of ​​44.3 km².

According to the US Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​44.3  km² , of which 44.2 km² is land and 0.1 km² (= 0.12%) is water. The Cahaba River and its tributary Buck Creek flow through the city. Buck Creek is dammed above Alabama State Route 261 and thus forms Lake Davidson in Old Town, which was used to drive a mill wheel at the turn of the 20th century, but is only used for recreational purposes today. Fishing and canoeing are popular pastimes on both rivers.

Helena lies at the foot of the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains , where they descend to the coastal plain on the Gulf of Mexico . The area consists of an undulating hilly landscape with numerous small watercourses and is overgrown by mixed forest.
