The Russell County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Phenix City .

The county is located in southeast Alabama, borders Georgia to the east and has an area of ​​1,677 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Barbour County , Bullock County , Macon County, and Lee Counties .

The county is part of the Columbus metropolitan area .

history

Russell County was formed on December 18, 1832 from the former territory of the Creek Indians. It was named after Colonel Gilbert C. Russell , a soldier in the Indian War. The first district capital was Girard, Seale in 1868 and Phenix City in 1930.

24 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 7, 2020, including three National Historic Landmarks : the Apalachicola Fort , the Fort Mitchell Historic Site and Yuchi Town .

Russell County's 2000 census counted 49,756 people. 687 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 19,741 households and 13,423 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.69 percent white, 40.84 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.07 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 85.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,492 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,004. Males had a median income of $ 28,696 versus $ 20,882 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,015. 16.8 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
