Phenix City is an American city in Russell County , Alabama . Parts of the city extend into Lee County . In Phenix City is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) of the Russell Countys and has about 30,067 inhabitants (as of 2006) on an area of 64.1 km².
history
The final battle of the American Civil War took place in Phenix City, then known as Girard .
For a few decades until the 1950s, Phenix City was also known as a gambling place with a lot of illegal crime. Lawyer Albert L. Patterson , who campaigned against crime and was elected Attorney General of Alabama, was shot dead outside his Phenix City office in the summer of 1954. As a result, his son John Malcolm Patterson took over the position of Attorney General and the Martial Law was imposed on Phenix City to clean up the crime. The events were processed as the 1955 Hollywood film A City Goes Through Hell .
