The county is located in northeastern Alabama, about 90 km to the east from Georgia , and has an area of ​​1,693 square kilometers, of which 51 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Etowah County , Calhoun County , Talladega County , Shelby County , Jefferson County, and Blount County .

St. Clair County was formed on November 20, 1818. It is named after the War of Independence general Arthur St. Clair .
