Ashville is a place in St. Clair County in the US state of Alabama . Ashville is the county seat of St. Clair County.

geography

Ashville is located in northeast Alabama in the southern United States. It is roughly halfway between the 733 square kilometer William B. Bankhead National Forest and the nearly 1,600 square kilometer Talladega National Forest .

Nearby locations include Steele (5 km northeast), Ragland (8 km southeast), Rainbow City (10 km northeast), Springville (14 km west), and Oneonta (15 km northwest). The next larger city with 212,000 inhabitants is about 40 kilometers southwest of Birmingham .

history

Ashville was founded in 1813 when the first settlers from Tennessee and Georgia arrived. The place was named after John Ash, who built a house there in 1817 that is still standing today and is considered the oldest house in the area. Until 1907, Ashville was the only county seat of St. Clair County.

traffic

The city is traversed from the south on a shared route by US Highway 231 and US Highway 411 . Around the center of the city, the former continues to the northwest, the latter to the northeast. US Highway 11 runs north of the city , about two kilometers south of Interstate 59 , which runs 715 kilometers from Louisiana to Georgia .

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is about 50 kilometers to the southwest .

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, the place had 2260 inhabitants, divided into 814 households and 608 families. The population density was 45.1 inhabitants / km². 69.42% of the population were white and 26.55% were African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 37% of households. The median income was $ 31,509 and 15.1% of the population of Ashville was below the poverty line .
