Oneonta is a city in Blount County , Alabama and its county seat . Oneonta has been the county seat of government since 1889 when it moved from Blountsville. The city has a population of 5576.

history

During the Second World War, a prisoner of war camp was set up outside the city.

Two bridges in the village are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 3, 2019), the Easley Covered Bridge and the Horton Mill Covered Bridge .

Demographics

At the 2000 census, Oneonta had 5,576 residents, 2,177 households and 1,419 families. The population density was 140.3 inhabitants / km 2 . 85.9% (4788) of the population are white, 7.4% (413) African-Americans, 13.2% (738) Hispanics.

21.5% of Oneonta's residents are under 18 years of age and 21.1% are 65 years of age or older. Oneonta is thus well above the US average of 12.4%. 47.4% of the total population is male, 52.3% female. The average income was 28,620 US dollars . 14.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

education

There are two schools in Oneonta: Oneonta Elementary School (grades 1–6) and Oneonta High School (7–12). There is also a library in town.
