Rainbow City is a city in Etowah , northeast Alabama . The urban area is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistic Area , the more urbanized part of the county in the southern center. Founded as one of the earliest settlements in the county, Rainbow City has enjoyed Incorporated City status since 1960 . The population was 9,531 in 2016.

The city of Rainbow City is part of the statistical metropolitan area around the county - administrative seat of Gadsden in the south-central part of Etowah County. In terms of location, the areas of Rainbow City, Attalla and Gadsden form the northern part of this agglomeration zone, while the Southside and Glencoe areas on the other bank of the Coosa River form the southern part. Geographically, Rainbow City lies in the border zone between the Cumberland Plateau in the north and the somewhat more level Piedmont area to the southeast - with the Coosa River, located south of the city limits, marking the approximate dividing line between the two landscape regions. The area of ​​today's Rainbow City is one of the oldest settlements in Etowah County. The first European who crossed the region was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto : On his expedition from Florida to the Mississippi Delta , which he undertook with a few hundred soldiers in 1539–1542, he is said to have crossed the Coosa River in 1540 near what is now Rainbow City.
