Coosa River near Jordan Dam |
The Coosa River is created by the confluence of the Oostanaula River and Etowah River near Rome , in northwest Georgia , in the southern Appalachians . About 90% of it runs in the neighboring state of Alabama , where it is one of the most popular rivers. There it flows just north of the state capital Montgomery with the Tallapoosa River to form the Alabama River . Alabama Power maintains six dams along the river to generate electricity. The biodiversity of the river suffers from these interferences in nature.
The origin of the river is the confluence of several tributaries from the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau : the Conasauga and Coosawattee , which together form the Oostanaula , and the Etowah .
Coosa County is named after the river.
